ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND A 9.5 STAR RATING In traditional homes the major energy costs are associated with water heating and space cooling and heating. In designing the sustainable home, the focus has been concentrated around reducing the energy use in these two main areas. A traditional 5 star rated home uses in excess of 55MJ/sq.m of power. The 9.5 star rated home uses 20.5 MJ/sq.m, which is a significant saving in the energy used per square meter in the home. In addition, when combined with the electricity key tag which cuts all electricity to the house when not required, (besides your chosen power outlets i.e. fridge). This can save you upwards of $1,200 per year on your energy bill. From 1 May 2010, a 6 Star energy rating is the minimum requirement when constructing a new home in QLD. Purchasing the 9.5 star energy efficient home not only saves you money over the life-cycle of the home but you are future proofing your asset and protecting your investment from building obsolescence.
