Reductions in energy consumption are achievable through more efficient use of energy in homes. Reductions in emissions and capacity are achievable through generation of energy from alternative sources. There is potential for substantial environmental savings through energy efficiency measures in Australian homes.
CO2 emissions can be reduced substantially each year for each light bulb replaced, with a more efficient alternative. CO2 emissions can be reduced by around one tonne per year by monitoring and adjusting heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems or by allowing just two degrees of variance in temperature. Greater efficiency of energy use, energy demand reduction methods and generation of energy from alternative sources are all means of addressing this urgent issue.
The Australian Greenhouse Office statistics show the use of electricity is responsible for 89% of commercial building greenhouse gas emissions. Specific operational energy applications principally responsible for greenhouse gas emissions are cooling (28%), air handling (22%), lighting (21%) and heating (13%).
